EXTREME MEDICINE II - Taking Medicine to the Extremes

28th - 31st October 2013

The inaugural European event of the World Extreme Medicine Conference and Expo series was held at the Royal Society of Medicine, central London, from the 15th - 18th April 2012. Following its success, we are delighted to launch the first North American event in October 2013. We are privileged to be holding this in association with Harvard Medical School and the Harvard-Affiliated Fellowship in Disaster Medicine and Emergency Management.

The conference will deliver 4 days of knowledge, insight and innovation in the field of remote medicine including pre-hospital medicine, expedition medicine, disaster medicine and other ‘extreme’ medicine fields. Delivering these messages will be speakers who are the global leaders in remote extreme medicine, ideally placed to provide expert knowledge transfer to you, our delegates.

Over the past ten years the care of casualties has significantly improved. Often this has been driven forward by conflict, the exponential rise in natural disasters and our capacity to respond on an international scale. All of this, concomitant with a growing interest in remote and expedition medicine, triggered the need for an extreme medicine conference.

Developed specifically with physicians, fellows and residents in mind, the World Extreme Medicine Conference and Expo will also be of interest to allied health professionals (nurses, EMTs and paramedics) as well as accessible for medical students  - all with discounted rates.

Prior to the conference a Pre Hospital Trauma and Management of Medical Emergencies in Remote Settings workshop will be running over 26 - 27 October for which conference delegates will receive a 15% discount.

Review of April's World Extreme Medicine Conference & Expo at the Royal Society of Medicine

The conference speakers included many of the very best speakers from around the world (including Dr Gordon Giesbrecht, Dr Greg Ciottone, Dr Kobi Peleg and Prof Mike Grocott), who are the world experts in many remote extreme medicine fields including expedition and wilderness, pre-hospital, disaster and relief medicine.

The specialist conference was developed specifically with medical professionals in mind, bringing together the learnings from various areas of remote medicine, and attracted delegates from around the world.  70% of the delegates were doctors with the rest of the audience being other medical specialists such as nurses, paramedics and 'aspiring' extreme medicine university students.

“This conference was a fantastic opportunity for medics to gain insight and knowledge from leading professionals in extreme medicine.”  Dr Amy Hughes, Medical Director, Expedition & Wilderness Medicine

Each day of the conference focused on different aspects of Extreme Medicine. The first day covered Expedition & Wilderness; the second day was built around Pre-Hospital Medicine, with days 3 and 4 covering Disaster Medicine and Extreme Medicine respectively.

With lectures varying from Dr Kevin Fong, television presenter and co-director of the Centre for Aviation Space and Extreme Environment Medicine (UCL) talking about space medicine; to Jon Snow discussing what it is like to be a journalist in extreme and hostile environments; the delegates found the 4 days very enjoyable as well as a superb networking opportunity. 90% of the 400 delegates said that they would come to the next conference.

Expedition & Wilderness Medicine look forward to meeting you there.
