70 firefighters tackle fire at Morden mosque site26 September 2015
Ten fire engines and 70 firefighters and officers are dealing with a fire in ancillary buildings and halls belonging to the Baitul Futuh mosque on London Road in Morden.
The fire is affecting administration buildings and associated halls adjacent to the mosque, which is the largest in western Europe. Around half of the ground floor, part of the first floor and part of the ancillary building's roof are involved in the blaze. Thanks to the quick actions of firefighters the mosque itself is unaffected by the fire.
Station Manager Philip Morton who is at the scene said: "This is a large fire and our crews have worked hard in difficult conditions to minimise fire spread within the affected building. Thankfully they have managed to confine the fire to the administrative buildings on the site and the mosque itself is unaffected. We have worked closely throughout the incident with the local community to ensure our damage control operations take full regard of the religious significance of the building's contents.
One man, who left the mosque before the Brigade arrived, has been taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service suffering from for smoke inhalation.
There is still a lot of traffic congestion near the incident so motorists are being advised to avoid the area if possible.
The Brigade was called at 1206. Crews from New Malden, Wandsworth, Tooting, Sutton, Mitcham and Norbury fire stations are attending the incident.
