Goede bewustwordingscampagne voor het publiek, iets wat je bij marathons in Nederland niet ziet.

Massachusetts National Guard helps safeguard Boston Marathon
By Massachusetts National Guard | April 18, 2016

HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – The Massachusetts National Guard  on Monday provided about  500 Soldiers and Airmen to assist federal, state and local police and other emergency responders with public safety and support during the 120h running of the 2016 Boston Marathon.

"The Massachusetts National Guard is proud to support the 120th Boston Marathon and will be working closely with officials from the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, the Boston Athletic Association and our Inter-Agency partners to ensure a safe and successful race," said Lt. Col. James Sahady, spokesman for the Massachusetts National Guard.

Col. Michael Finer, commander of Joint Task Force Patriot, will supervise the combined Guard's efforts to assist federal, state and local police to keep the route safe for the runners from Hopkinton to the edge of Boston.

The National Guard will provide specialized chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear (CBRN), and improvised explosive detection teams, as well as medical and security personnel to assist local communities along the route to ensure the race is safe and successful.

Two pressure-cooker bombs exploded April 15, 2013, at the 117th running of the Boston Marathon. The blasts killed three people and wounded at least 264 others.

2016 Boston Marathon

On Monday April 18th, 2016, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) hosted the Public Safety Multi-Agency Coordination Center (MACC), for the 120th running of the Boston Marathon.

Over 220 individuals representing more than 50+ local, regional, state, federal, private and volunteer agencies and organizations staffed the MACC. The MACC worked with local, state and federal emergency operations centers to maintain situational awareness and a common operating picture, facilitated multi-jurisdictional decision making, ensured effective communication and coordination between the BAA and public safety, met resource and mutual aid needs, and coordinated multi-jurisdictional public safety operations (including law enforcement tactical operations, intelligence and investigation activities, and emergency medical services).

Thank You For Thanking Us: Spectator Captures True Spirit of the Boston Marathon
April 20, 2016

Today, we received a montage of photos from one of our Facebook followers who had watched the Boston Marathon a few hundred feet from the Finish Line on Boylston Street. The spectator, who wished to remain anonymous, wrote in a message that he witnessed and took pictures of a Boston Police Officer assisting a runner that he wished to share with the public. Said the spectator:

“Today [Monday, April 18] I watched the Boston Marathon from the 5th floor at 745 Boylston Street. I witnessed an act of kindness that I want people to know about. When a runner could not continue, with only yards to go to the finish line, this officer stepped in. I do not know what he told her, but I know I was inspired.

[The officer] helped her open the water bottle as we watched from the 5th floor window. The crowd was roaring their support.

He continued to console and encourage her. You could tell he was not going to let her stop and give up there.

After several tries, he helped her up. She jumped back in the race and crossed the finish line 60 seconds later.

I have a few pictures and do not want credit, but I only think it is fair that an act of sincere support receives the appreciation that it truly deserves.”

We want to say “thank you” to this spectator for capturing and sharing this inspiring moment—one that displays what the spirit of the Boston Marathon is all about!

Ari Ofsevit, 31, of Cambridge was minutes away from completing his second Boston Marathon on April 18, 2016, when he collapsed 100 yards from the finish line due to heat exhaustion and dehydration. Two fellow runners helped him across the finish line, where he was attended to in the medical tent and then rushed to Tufts Medical Center. Here is his story in his own words.

MEMA again hosted the Public Safety Multi-Agency Coordination Center (MACC) for the running of the Boston Marathon.

Beginning at 5:30 a.m. on Monday April 18, over 220 individuals representing more than 60 local, regional, state, federal, private and volunteer agencies and organizations staffed the MACC for the duration of the event.

Although the 30,000 runners dealt with temperatures in the 70’s for part of the race, a relatively low number of participants needed care from medical personnel and stations along the course and at the finish line.

Approximately 1,100 runners sought attention in the 26 medical tents along the course, with an additional 1,500 receiving medical care in the medical tents at the finish line.

Approximately 150 runners were transported by ambulance to local hospitals.

The MACC successfully connected local, state and federal emergency operations centers and command posts to provide and maintain situational awareness and a common operating picture, facilitate multi-jurisdictional decision making, and ensure effective communication and coordination between the Boston Athletic Center and public safety personnel across the eight host cities and towns.
