Confirmed Explosion In Chelsea

Remarks as prepared for NYPD Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill:
At around 8:30 P.M. this evening, officers from the 10th Precinct were on routine patrol, driving westbound on 23rd Street, when they witnessed a large explosion in front of 131 West 23rd Street. The officers immediately called for additional units and ambulances.
The NYPD Bomb Squad and the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force were requested to respond. As of this time, the exact cause of this explosion has not been determined. Investigation into this incident is active at this time and an extensive search is being conducted. The area around the explosion site is being treated as a crime scene.
As of this time, there is no evidence to indicate that this explosion is a result of any natural gas cause. Again, the exact nature and cause of this explosion has not yet been determined. As of the most recent information, there have been 27 injuries reported. One of these injuries may be considered serious. The Fire Department is currently assessing the extent of any possible structural damage resulting from this explosion.
As further information is developed, we will provide updates. At this point, anyone with potential information about the incident is asked to call NYPD CrimeStoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.

UPDATED
The Commonwealth Fusion Center (CFC) is monitoring intelligence related to last night’s explosive detonation in NYC’s Chelsea neighborhood and the subsequent discovery of a separate apparent improvised explosive device four blocks away, as well as the non-fatal stabbings of eight people at a mall in St. Cloud, Minn.
As with the NJ and Philadelphia incidents, Massachusetts State Police and our CFC partners are gathering all available information from the FBI and state and local law enforcement in the attack jurisdictions. As well, our MSP Bomb Squad has been in touch with its counterparts in NY and NJ to share information.
We will continue to analyze that information to determine if it has any connection to Massachusetts. As of this point, no nexus to Massachusetts has been found.
All relevant information is being disseminated by the CFC to police agencies throughout Massachusetts.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today directed the State Police and National Guard to deploy an additional 1,000 uniformed officers out of an abundance of caution to high-profile locations across the state following an explosion in Chelsea on Saturday night. At the Governor’s direction, state agencies, including the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, the New York State Police, National Guard, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will remain on a heightened state of alert.
The Governor also announced that after a rigorous inspection, MTA and PATH train service has been restored and both systems suffered no structural damage. All trains running on the E, F lines will continue to bypass 23rd street station and trains running on the No. 1 line will not stop at 23rd or 28th street stations. The Governor visited the site of the explosion this morning and delivered an update on the scene, touring the subway system with state transportation officials.
“Protecting the safety of New Yorkers and our state’s visitors is priority number one,”Governor Cuomo said. “After thorough inspection, train service has been restored and we continue to work closely with our local and federal partners to monitor the situation. Out of an abundance of caution, we are increasing security at high-profile locations across the city, and all state agencies continue to remain on alert.”
Metropolitan Transportation Authority
The MTA has increased its patrols and surveillance in order to provide heightened protection across all its agencies. The MTA Police Department has stepped up its uniformed and plainclothes presence, and police canine teams and emergency service units will provide extra protection as well as a noticeable sign of increased security. Railroad customers will also see surge patrols, increased step-on/step-off patrols of trains, and random bag checks at various locations.
Behind the scenes, the MTA Police Department, MTA New York City Transit security and MTA Bridges and Tunnels Officers share intelligence information and coordinate their response with other police and security agencies to ensure a seamless web of protection throughout the region. Detectives are monitoring and disseminating intelligence information as needed.
PATH
As previously announced, PATH service to 23rd Street and 6th Avenue has been suspended for the weekend to allow work to continue on the tunnels. Work crews were in the uptown tunnel on Saturday evening, and the tunnels have been determined safe for passenger service at this time. PATH service to 23rd Street will resume at 5:00 a.m. on Monday. The Port Authority Police Department has increased high-visibility patrols at all Port Authority facilities.

Wat is precies de officiele weg? We weten dat de terreurbestrijders in Nederland al een keer een email van de antiterreureenheid van politie New York gemist heeft, de minister dacht in eerste instantie zelfs dat de FBI de afzender was. De Turken hebben ook al eens een poging gewaagd om Nederland te waarschuwen echter moet het wel precies in de juiste inbox terecht komen en moet er een hoge prioriteit aan het bericht zijn toegevoegd omdat je anders het risico loopt dat niemand het vandaag, morgen of volgende week een keer gaat lezen. Het is een overweging waard om Belgie via de officiele weg in te lichten, ik dacht dat Belgie goed is in informatie delen met buurland Nederland.
De NOS heeft het net al uitgezonden op TV (journaal van 14 uur op Nederland 1). Ze houden wel rekening met de privacy van de verdachte Ahmed R. Als de NOS het weet is het raar als de politie in Nederland het niet zou weten.
Het gaat hier om een opzettelijke explosie, dus niet om terreur volgens de Amerikaanse autoriteiten. Gisteren hebben ze bij herhaling gezegd dat er geen enkele link zou zijn met internationaal terrorisme.
Ik denk dat deze persoon als hij de USA had willen verlaten ook niet besluit om naar een land te vertrekken met een uitleveringsverdag met de USA.

The same Afghan-born US suspect is wanted for questioning in connection with both a weekend attack in New York and a New Jersey pipe bombing earlier that day, police said Monday.
New Jersey State Police said Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28, from Elizabeth, New Jersey, was wanted for questioning in connection with both the bombing along the route of a US Marine Corps charity race in Seaside Park and the bombing in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood, in which 29 people were injured.

De Amerikaanse politie heeft maandag de 28-jarige Amerikaan van Afghaanse origine aangehouden die als verdachte wordt gezien in het onderzoek naar de explosies in New York van zaterdag.
Dat melden diverse Amerikaanse media.
Ahmad Khan Rahami zou zijn aangehouden na een schotenwisseling met de politie. Hierbij zou zeker één agent zijn getroffen.
President Obama liet in een toespraak weten dat er iemand is aangehouden, maar bevestigde niet dat het om Rahami ging.
Bij de explosie in de New Yorkse wijk Chelsea raakten 29 mensen gewond. Een tweede explosief werd gevonden op 27th Street. Eerder ontplofte in New Jersey al een exposief in Seaside Park. Maandagochtend werd in New Jersey bovendien een rugtas met vijf explosieven gevonden.
"Ik ben de politie dankbaar dat ze zo snel hebben kunnen handelen", liet Obama weten. "We hebben geluk gehad dat er niemand is omgekomen."

The man believed to be behind weekend bombings in New York's Chelsea neighborhood, Seaside Park, New Jersey and Elizabeth, New Jersey has been taken into custody following a incident with police in Linden, New Jersey.
Details are just coming in, but law enforcement sources say Ahmad Khan Rahami was captured following gunfire. He is reportedly alive but wounded, and two police officers were also hurt. It appears one was shot, but neither sustained life-threatening injuries
