Several Hurt In Explosions At Boston Marathon Finish Line
BOSTON (CBS) – Several people have been hurt in two explosions near the Boston Marathon finish line.
It happened around 2:45 p.m. outside Marathon Sports on Boylston Street, according to WBZ-TV’s Lis Hughes, who was near the scene covering the marathon.
There were two “incredibly powerful explosions just seconds apart,” according to Hughes.

Authorities are investigating a report of two explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.
There were two booms heard from near the finish line inside the Fairmount Copley Plaza Hotel.
Race officials locked down the hotel because of the report.
The sound of two booms, which sounded like thunder, had come a short time earlier.

Zeker drie mensen zijn omgekomen bij twee bomexplosies bij de finish van een marathon in de Amerikaanse stad Boston. Diverse mensen zijn gewodn geraakt. Getuigen verklaren dat verschillende slachtoffers ledematen hebben verloren en dat gewonden hevig bloedend naar tenten zijn gebracht.
De hulpdiensten zijn massaal aanwezig. De meeste slachtoffers zouden onder bezoekers zijn.
De marathon is direct afgeblazen. De omgeving is geëvacueerd.
De explosies waren circa 3 uur nadat de winnaars de finish hadden gepasseerd in Boylston Street in het zuidwesten van het centrum van de stad. De politie van Boston bevestigde dat er zeker één explosie was aan de finish. Daar hadden zich duizenden toeschouwers op tribunes verzameld, terwijl duizenden lopers de eindstreep passeerden. De Boston Marathon beleefde maandag zijn 117e editie. De stad ligt aan de oostkust, ongeveer 650 kilometer ten noordoosten van de hoofdstad Washington.

De politie van Boston laat maandag een verdacht voorwerp ontploffen vlakbij de bibliotheek van de stad. De angst voor bomaanslagen is groot na twee explosies bij de finish van de marathon. Daarbij vielen volgens meldingen van de politie zeker 2 doden en 23 gewonden.
Alle politieverloven zijn ingetrokken in de noordoostelijke havenstad. Het gaat bij de explosies om bomaanlagen, bevestigde de marathonleiding.

Met name gezien een vaak gebruikte tactiek bij aanslagen die een link met Al-Qaida hebben: laat een bom afgaan, veroorzaak paniek en daar waar mensen samenkomen laat je een tweede bom afgaan. Zie je hier ook al enigszins terug: daar waar de renners gaan 'opstropen' na de eerste explosie vindt explosie twee plaats.

Verzet tegen controle / niet meewerken leidt in zo'n situaties vaak tot aanhouding. Dat betekent vooralsnog niet dat het een verdachte van de aanslagen is.
Het is mij wel bekend hoe het gaat in zo'n situatie. Maar geef alleen maar aan wat er bij deze foto werd vermeld.
Zo gaf de burgemeester van Boston ook al aan dat er agenten naar alle ziekenhuizen zijn. Dit is een standaard procedure en wil niet zeggen dat daar aangehouden verdachten zijn.

Degene die de foto op Twitter plaatste gaf later ook zelf aan dat hij niet wist of dit gerelateerd was aan de explosies en BPD heeft dat dus inmiddels ontkracht.

Authorities believe they were caused by small portable devices, sources told ABC News. More than 400 National Guardsmen in attendance at the marathon helped secure a perimeter around the scene.

Zeker drie doden bij aanslag tijdens marathon Boston
Bij de finish van de marathon van Boston hebben zich maandagmiddag lokale tijd twee explosies voorgedaan. Daarbij zijn zeker drie doden gevallen, waaronder een achtjarige jongen. De FBI spreekt van een terroristische aanslag.
Explosies Boston
Daarnaast zijn er meer dan 140 gewonden gevallen. Uit videobeelden blijkt dat er twee grote ontploffingen waren bij de finish van de marathon. Er zou twaalf seconden hebben gezeten tussen de twee explosies in dezelfde straat.
De politie van Boston heeft in een persconferentie tegen 03.00 uur Nederlandse tijd bevestigd dat er drie doden zijn gevallen. CNN bericht dat een achtjarige jongen één van de doden is. Het jongetje zou met zijn moeder en zusje hebben staan wachten bij de finish op zijn deelnemende vader. De moeder en het meisje zouden ernstig gewond in het ziekenhuis liggen. Zo vertelt correspondent Erik Mouthaan dinsdagochtend in het RTL Ontbijtnieuws.
De politie wilde de dood van de achtjarige jongen tijdens de persconferentie niet bevestigen. In andere Amerikaanse media wordt gesproken over 12 doden.
Gewonden
CNN meldt 144 gewonden, waarvan acht kinderen. 17 gewonden verkeren in kritieke toestand. Alle slachtoffers zijn van de plek des onheils weggevoerd.
Ze worden behandeld in zeven verschillende ziekenhuizen. Er zou volgens CNN sprake zijn van tien amputaties.
De FBI leidt het onderzoek. De politie benadrukte tijdens de persconferentie dat er geen verdachten zijn opgepakt. Om 6.00 uur Nederlandse tijd meldde persbureau AP dat er in een buitenwijk van Boston een appartement wordt doorzocht.
De politie bevestigt dat de huiszoeking in de wijk Revere te maken heeft met het onderzoek naar de aanslag tijdens de marathon.
Explosies
De explosies waren circa drie uur nadat de winnaars de finish hadden gepasseerd in Boylston Street in het zuidwesten van het centrum van de stad. Daar hadden zich duizenden toeschouwers op tribunes verzameld, terwijl duizenden lopers de eindstreep passeerden. Zeventienduizend van de 23 duizend deelnemers hadden de marathon toen uitgelopen.
Volgens ooggetuigen werden slachtoffers hevig bloedend, en met afgrukte ledematen afgevoerd naar tenten die origineel voor de marathonlopers waren opgezet. Op deze foto is het moment van de explosies vastgelegd.
Meerdere bommen
De explosieven opruimingsdienst heeft een derde explosief gecontroleerd af laten gaan. Fox News meldt dat twee andere bommen zijn ontmanteld. Een hooggeplaatste medewerker van een Amerikaanse inlichtingendienst spreekt van twee onontplofte bommen in de buurt van het eind van de route. Dat meldt Novum dinsdagochtend.
Wall Street Journal meldt in de nacht van maandag op dinsdag dat er in totaal vijf andere onontplofte bommen zouden zijn gevonden. Later corrigeerde Wall Street Journal dit met de tekst: "Autoriteiten twijfelen of vondsten bommen zijn".
Volgens CNN is er vooralsnog enkel sprake van speculatie wat betreft onontplofte bommen die zouden zijn gevonden.
Bibliotheek
Naast de twee explosieven bij de finish van de marathon zou er nog een andere bom zijn afgegaan bij de JFK-bibliotheek, zei het politiehoofd van Boston Ed Davis tijdens de eerste persconferentie. Later bleek dit om een brand te gaan. Onderzoekers hebben geen verband gelegd tussen de brand en twee bomaanslagen.
Het luchtruim boven de plaats van het incident is afgesloten. Ook Boston Logan Airport was korte tijd afgesloten, maar is inmiddels weer open.
'Ga naar huis'
"We roepen mensen op om naar huis of naar hun hotel te gaan. Het is niet verstandig om samen te scholen. Dit is een lopende gebeurtenis", zei Davis. "Ooggetuigen worden door de politie ondervraagd. In alle ziekenhuizen is een sterke politieaanwezigheid."
Het mobiele telefoonverkeer is stilgelegd uit angst dat telefoons worden gebruikt om bommen te laten ontploffen. De website van de krant Boston Globe meldde dat er aan de Commonwealth Avenue die evenwijdig loopt aan de Boylston Street waar de marathon eindigde, een winkelcentrum is ontruimd.
Tevens zijn zo'n 15 blokken rondom de plek van de explosies afgesloten. Deze blijven de komende 24 uur afgesloten voor mensen. Aldus Fox News.
Obama
President Obama gaf iets na middernacht een eerste reactie vanuit het Witte Huis.
"Alle mensen die nodig zijn worden ingezet. We gaan uitzoeken wie dit heeft gedaan en waarom dit is gedaan", zei Obama, nadat hij zijn medeleven overbracht. "Maar vergis je niet: de daders zullen de volledige aandacht van justitie krijgen. We zullen ze ter verantwoording roepen."
De president gebruikte het woord 'terrorisme' niet, maar maakte wel duidelijk dat sprake was van aanslagen. "We weten nog niet wie dit heeft gedaan en waarom en mensen moeten oppassen dat ze niet te snel conclusies trekken."
Terreurdaad
Het Witte Huis bracht naar buiten voorlopig uit te gaan van een terreurdaad.
''Ieder incident met meerdere explosieven, waar het nu om lijkt te gaan, is duidelijk een terreurdaad en wordt dus ook benaderd als een terreurdaad'', liet een woordvoerder weten.
Volgens het Witte Huis moet onderzoek uitwijzen of een terroristische groepering achter de aanslag zit en of het gaat om binnenlandse of buitenlandse aanslagplegers.
Kort daarvoor had ook de FBI de explosies al een terreuraanslag genoemd, meldde CNN. De politiedienst zei ook nog niet te weten of binnenlandse of buitenlandse aanslagplegers achter de explosies zitten.
73 Nederlanders
De Boston Marathon beleefde maandag zijn 117e editie, waaraan volgens de inschrijving 73 Nederlanders deelnamen. De stad ligt aan de oostkust, ongeveer 650 kilometer ten noordoosten van de hoofdstad Washington.
Onder de slachtoffers van de aanslagen in Boston zijn geen Nederlanders. Dat heeft het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken in Den Haag in de nacht van maandag op dinsdag laten weten.
''Er zijn tot nu toe geen meldingen binnengekomen van de lokale autoriteiten dat er Nederlanders onder de slachtoffers zouden zijn'', aldus een woordvoerster van het ministerie.
Hoogste staat van paraatheid
Hoewel de verantwoordelijken voor de explosies nog niet bekend zijn, zijn verschillende Amerikaanse steden, waaronder New York, Los Angeles en San Fransisco, in hoogste staat van paraatheid gebracht. Het politiehoofd van Boston Ed Davis wilde nog niet ingaan op de verantwoordelijkheid en of het een terroristische daad betreft. "Maar jullie kunnen jullie eigen conclusie trekken."
De beveiligingsdienst van president Obama heeft het beveiligingsniveau bij het Witte Huis verhoogd. Er is een gebied rondom de residentie van de president afgezet.

De Nationaal Coördinator Terrorismebestrijding en Veiligheid (NCTV) volgt de ontwikkelingen in Boston op de voet. Dat meldde een woordvoerster maandagavond. ''We doen ons best om meer te weten te komen over de achtergronden van de explosies tijdens de marathon van Boston.''
Ze kon niet zeggen of de veiligheidsmaatregelen in Nederland na de explosies in de VS zijn verscherpt. ''Over de beveiliging van personen en gebouwen doen we nooit mededelingen.''

Nurses relied on trauma experience to help bombing wounded
CNN) -- Of all the Boston Marathons he's worked, and he's done a half-dozen of them, Stephen Segatore figured this one would be pretty easy.
The weather was cool, so the runners probably wouldn't be at much risk for heat stroke or dehydration. Maybe he'd help people with muscle cramps or twisted ankles, but not much more than that.
Segatore, a nurse for 18 years, started his day Monday with the elite athletes in Medical Tent B toward the start of the race. Once those runners were well on their way, he transferred to Tent A at the finish line. He was talking to a group of doctors and nurses when they heard the first explosion.
Instantly, a team meant to tend to the achy and exhausted became a trauma team. The first step: those who didn't have experience with trauma stepped aside. Those with experience dashed out in the direction of the noise.
Segatore, who works in the intensive care unit at nearby Tufts Medical Center, had experience.
"I ran out and saw people who were missing legs and part of their face and part of their abdomen," he said Monday evening. "My training prepared me for what to do, but nothing can ever really prepare you for what you see."
Segatore was one of a team of dozens of doctors and nurses who volunteered at Monday's Boston Marathon. They worked quickly to stop bleeding and start IVs so patients could get into ambulances and to hospital emergency rooms. They treated dozens of patients without proper supplies for severe trauma, such as dressings and pain medications.
"No one expects to work at the Boston Marathon and end up at a terrorist attack," he said.
One of his first patients was a young woman, he thinks maybe 20 or 22 years old, whose abdomen was torn open. Her left leg was broken and facing the wrong way and she wasn't breathing. He and his colleagues did CPR on her and kept checking for a pulse, but there was none. They stopped when they realized it was futile.
She became the first patient in their makeshift morgue.
Segatore and others checked her pockets for a wallet, an ID, a cell phone, anything that would help them find her parents' names. There was nothing.
"I still don't know who she was," he said. "She had blonde hair, blue eyes, the all-American girl. She was probably a student somewhere in Boston."
"I've seen people die all over the world, but I've never been this upset or angry in my career," Segatore said. "This is the Boston Marathon. People come from all over the world and all of a sudden that world exploded on them."
Working alongside Segatore in Tent A was Jim Asaiante, a nurse in the emergency room at the UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts. Asaiante didn't run out after the explosion. He has plenty of experience in trauma, but as a veteran of the Iraq War, he's also had plenty of experience with explosions.
"I heard the first IED (improvised explosive device), and I know there's never one. The bad guys always set up two or three," said Asaiante, an Army captain who did an 18-month tour in Iraq in 2006 and 2007.
Another victim was brought into the tent, a man with his calves and feet blown off and blood pumping out of his knees. Asaiante put a tourniquet on him, started an IV, and in 15 minutes the man, who was screaming in pain, was in an ambulance.
After the second explosion, Asaiante ran out of the tent.
"There was lots of bleeding, shrapnel, glass. It was mayhem," he said. "The injuries were very similar to Iraq."
Despite the chaos, he said the work of the doctors, nurses and EMTs was "impeccable."
Segatore agreed.
"The most amazing thing was how everyone worked in tandem. They didn't even have to speak a word between each other," he said. "In 20 years of nursing, this was the most amazing two hours of nursing in my life."

Doctors amputate limbs as marathon celebration turns to carnage
(CNN) -- The full horror of Monday's bomb attacks in Boston was reflected in emergency rooms across the city as doctors were forced to perform amputations and treat injuries normally expected on a battlefield.
Around 11 p.m. ET, at least 144 people were reported to have been taken to hospital with wounds sustained from the blasts that brought terror and chaos to the city's annual marathon race.
Three people, including an eight-year-old boy, were killed, while at least 17 people are reported to be in a critical condition.
Designed to propel shrapnel
Images in the immediate aftermath showed people being carried away on stretchers -- one man in a wheelchair had blood all over his face and legs.
While many patients were treated for cuts and scrapes, doctors have also been "pulling ball bearings out of people in the emergency room," suggesting the bombs were designed to propel shrapnel, according to one terrorism expert briefed on the Boston blasts, though CNN is yet to confirm this.
Medical teams have also carried out at least 10 amputations and treated many leg injuries, suggesting the device was low to the ground, according to CNN's Deborah Feyerick.
Among the 28 people taken to the city's Brigham and Women's Hospital, the most common types of injuries are to the bone and tissue, hospital spokesman Tom Langford told CNN.
He said nine of those patients have potentially limb-threatening wounds. A 3-year-old victim was transferred to Boston Children's Hospital for treatment.
Amputated limbs
Dr. Peter Fagenholz, a trauma surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital, told reporters he treated many of the 29 patients who arrived at the hospital for shrapnel wounds.
"Many of the victims were hit with "a lot of small, metal debris," he said.
"Some people have asked already whether they were BBs or parts of bombs," he said, referring to earlier reports that ball bearings have been pulled from victims. "We can't say whether they were placed their intentionally or whether they were just part of the environment."
He said the most serious wounds "have been combined, complex lower injuries that involve blood vessels, bone and tissue." Some of the patients had to have limbs amputated, Fagenholz added.
"A number of patients will require repeat operations and serial operations over the next couple of days," he said, adding that he had been in surgery for almost 14 hours.
Describing the horror
Theresa Panter, who had been running in the marathon, described the scene as she approached the finishing line.
"When I heard the bomb and saw the reaction of the spectators, I was just alarmed. Then I was pushed back by a spectator and then a Boston Athletic official -- he grabbed a bunch of us and pushed us back. It was pretty upsetting."
Her husband, Dr. Allan Panter, was in the crowd and described how he ended up tending to people on the streets.
"I saw at least six to seven people down next to me -- they protected me from the blast. One lady expired, one gentleman lost both his limbs, his lower extremities. Most of the injuries were mainly lower extremity injuries.
"I could not figure out why the young lady had expired, I could not find any injury on her thorax."

Israelis helped prepare Boston hospital for mass-casualty event
An Israeli team has been credited for having prepared the Massachusetts General Hospital for the current influx of victims of the Boston marathon bombing.
Seventeen critically injured people are being treated at the hospital after two explosions in downtown Boston on Tuesday afternoon.
Alastair Conn, Chief of Emergency Services at Massachusetts General Hospital told reporters: “About two years ago in actual fact we asked the Israelis to come across and they helped us set up our disaster team so that we could respond in this manner.”
According to the Algemeiner, when Dr Conn was asked about the explosions, “Would you characterise these as almost something you would see in a military setting?”
He responded: “Absolutely, this is like a bomb explosion that we hear about in the news in Baghdad, or Israel or some other tragic place in the world.”
At the latest count, the attacks have killed three and injured 140.
The two devices exploded amongst spectators near the finish line.
Rabbi Mayer Zarchi from Boston Chabad synagogue was at the scene. He said: “People just started running away from the centre, from the finish line.”
“I’ve never seen anything like this before – the nature of the carnage, you can’t really articulate it in words. It was unreal.”
Abraham Foxman ADL National Director said in a statement: “Like all Americans, we were deeply shocked by the apparent bombing of the Boston Marathon. It is sad that any time a bomb explodes in public place we are conditioned as a first reflex to think of it as a terrorist attack; but unfortunately, in this instance it appears that our fears have been realised.”
When asked whether it was a terrorist attack, Boston Police commissioner Ed Davis told reporters: "We're not being definitive about this right now, but you can reach your own conclusions based on what happened."
At a briefing at the White House, US President Barack Obama said: "The American people will say a prayer for Boston tonight. Michelle and I send our deepest thoughts and prayers to the families of the victims in the wake of this senseless loss."
"We will find out who did this and we will hold them accountable," he said. "Make no mistake, we will find out who did this and why they did this, and the groups or individuals responsible will feel the full weight of justice."

Update regarding explosion at the Boston Marathon
Boston Children’s Hospital received 10 patients injured in the explosion at the Boston Marathon on the afternoon of April 15. Our Trauma Activation Protocol was activated at 4 PM, and we expect it will be deactivated shortly. All clinical and operational activities will occur as scheduled on Tuesday, April 16, 2013.

At least 21 of the injured were taken to Beth Israel Deaconess, where about 100 additional physicians, nurses, and other personnel descended on emergency rooms to help out the 25 or so typically there during a Monday afternoon.
Dr. Richard Wolfe, chief of the emergency department, said that in his 14 years at the hospital, “nothing comes close” to what he witnessed Monday. Of the 21 people brought into the emergency room, at least seven had life-threatening injuries. He said one patient had both legs amputated and one person had one leg removed in the operating room. One or two patients were in a very “dicey” situation, Wolfe said, in their ability to survive their injuries.
Patients had severe eye damage, deep flesh wounds, and ruptured internal organs.
ER staff at the hospital are trained to handle the kinds of critical injuries they handled Monday — many were similar to the trauma seen in serious car accidents — but by around 6:30 p.m., when most patients had been transferred out of the emergency room and into other parts of the hospital, many staff members could not contain their suppressed emotions any longer. American Red Cross in action following explosions in Boston
Volunteers from the American Red Cross were immediately on the scene following the twin explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon yesterday. Three people were killed and over 100 were injured by the explosions.
The organization’s Regional Disaster Operations Centre had been on alert all day supporting the marathon and became fully operational once the scale of the disaster was known. As part of its normal operations, the American Red Cross had 26 first aid stations positioned along the marathon route. No volunteers or staff were reported among the injured.
In addition to providing first aid services on the ground, the Red Cross also opened up its Safe and Well service (www.redcross.org/safeandwell (http://www.redcross.org/safeandwell)) to allow people in Boston to list themselves as ‘safe’ to reassure family and friends.
In a statement, the organization said it was well placed to respond to the disaster. “Even before the explosion we were assisting with the race and we continue to support runners, their loved ones and the entire community with mental health assistance, food, drinks and blankets at the reception sites. In addition, the Red Cross has provided 100 additional blood products to several area hospitals to help meet the needs of those injured at the Boston Marathon.”

Talking to children after tragedy
Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you that have been affected by the devastating tragedy here in Boston. It is beyond comprehension.
As the news unfolds and we all try to make sure that our loved ones and friends are okay, here are some suggestions for parents (adapted from our advice after the Connecticut shootings):
Tell your children what happened–it’s important that they hear it from you. Do it in a broad-strokes way (“There were explosions at the marathon and some people were hurt”)
Answer their questions simply and honestly (again, in a broad-strokes way–details aren’t necessary)
Limit their exposure to media. It’s hard not to end up glued to the television, especially as events are unfolding, but it may be very upsetting to children. Use your laptop or smart phone instead.
Make sure they know that events like these are very rare. It’s usually very safe to be in public places.
Let them know that you, and other helping adults, are working all the time to keep them safe. Talk about some of the ways you do this.
Understand that they, like you, may need time to process what has happened. They may be upset but not even know why, so be patient if they act out in unusual ways.
If your child is very sad or anxious and nothing you are doing is helping, call your doctor.
Give lots of extra hugs. They will help you, too.

Boston Children’s Hospital received 10 patients injured in the explosion at the Boston Marathon on the afternoon of April 15, 2013. Our Trauma Activation Protocol was activated at 4 p.m. and deactivated at 9 p.m. All clinical and operational activities are occurring as scheduled today, Tuesday, April 16.
As of this morning at 9 a.m., seven patients have been discharged and three remain in the hospital. Two are in critical condition in the Medical/Surgical ICU and one is on a surgical unit.
Details on the current patients:
2-year-old boy with a head injury is in good condition
10-year-old boy with multiple leg injuries is in critical condition.
9-year-old girl with a leg injury is in critical condition.
The seven patients discharged were the following:

At 5:20 a.m. on Monday, four hours before the Boston Marathon's elite runners took off, a group of 15 active-duty soldiers from the Massachusetts National Guard gathered at the starting line in Hopkinton. EIGHT PATIENTS REMAIN in a critical condition at Massachusetts General Hospital tonight, according to the Emergency Department’s trauma surgeon.
Dr Peter Fagenholz told reporters that of the 29 marathon patients being treated at the medical centre, eight are “seriously ill”. Many will require follow-up and serial operations over the coming days, he said.

We hebben hier te maken met de hysterie na een aanslag, waardoor elk incident direkt gelinkt wordt aan het incident tijdens de Boston Marathon.
Er is echter geen enkele reden - anders dan de hysterie - die op dit moment een link legt met de aanslag.
Dit soort ontruimingen zijn in Amerika heel gewoon en gebeuren geregeld. Schietpartijen, bedreigingen, gijzelingen - only in America, baby!
En de media willen niks missen om niks te missen (zie de berichten over wel/geen arrestatie) waardoor de nauwkeurigheid van berichtgeving ernstig te wensen over laat. Ik roep alleen maar in herinnering de Saüdiër die was gepakt enkele uren na de aanslag - bleek ook al niet te kloppen.
Dus wees even kritisch en wacht even totdat bepaalde dingen wel gerelateerd kunnen worden. Blijf niet hangen bij 1 nieuwszender, maar kijk of het ook bevestigd wordt. Anders loopt dit topic heel snel vol met zaken die hier niets mee te maken hebben.

Violence haunts Boston area in wake of Marathon terror
(CNN) -- Violent incidents early Friday, including the shooting death of a college police officer, kept Bostonians on edge just days after the bombing of the iconic Boston Marathon.
Howling sirens pierced the night quiet, and flashing lights lit up the darkness, as dozens of officers from state and city police responded to the deadly shooting on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. Hardly an hour later, they were chasing suspects in a hijacked vehicle just less than five miles away.
There were reports that explosives may have been involved before police cornered the vehicle.
"Police were in a standoff with the vehicle just down the hill," said CNN photographer Gabe Ramirez saw the chase end in Watertown. They ordered the suspect out of vehicle and commanded he strip down naked before putting him in a patrol car and transporting him away from the scene, Ramirez said.

Police ran down the streets of Watertown, according to CNN affiliate WCVB, which broadcast images from the pursuit. One man could be seen lying face down on the street in a surrender pose with his hands outstretched in front of him and his legs crossed.
Dozens of police from various units arrived in Watertown, some in SWAT uniforms, others wearing helmets. Large crowds gathered around a trove of emergency vehicles that had congregated in the neighborhood, WCVB reported.
But even with all this activity it was unclear if the arrest in Watertown was related to the shooting on the MIT campus or any other incident in the Boston area.

Klopjacht politie na dood agent universiteit bij Boston
Agenten in de Verenigde Staten zijn op zoek naar een schutter nadat een politieagent donderdagavond (lokale tijd) doodgeschoten werd op de campus van Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge. Mogelijk is er een verband met de aanslag bij de marathon in Boston maandag, volgens sommige berichten is één verdachte van die aanslag bij de politieactie gearresteerd.
De campus van de MIT is nog afgesloten. De universiteit roept op de website iedereen op binnen te blijven en laat weten dat de verdachte in elk geval niet meer op de campus aanwezig is en waarschijnlijk nog op vrije voeten. de Politie is inmiddels in Watertown, vlakbij de campus. Daar zouden volgens Amerikaanse media schoten en explosies zijn gehoord. Een helikopter cirkelt boven het gebied.
Volgens sommige berichten zou de schietpartij te maken hebben met de aanslag van afgelopen maandag bij de marathon van Boston. Cambride en MIT liggen vlakbij Boston. Boston Chldren's at Waltham is CLOSED until further notice. Main Campus in Boston as well as campuses in Lexington, Peabody, and Weymouth are operating business as usual.
Staffing Update
· Staff living in Watertown, Newton, Waltham, Belmont, Cambridge and the Allston and Brighton neighborhoods of Boston are advised to stay indoors. However, please work with your manager to determine if you should come into work.

Boston Children's Hospital
At 8:30 a.m., Friday, April 19, 2013, Boston Children’s Hospital’s main campus in the Longwood Medical Area of was designated as “locked down” due to police and federal security activity related to the search for suspects in the Boston Marathon explosions.
Locked down means patient appointments today are cancelled and inpatients will not be discharged from the hospital until further notice. Boston Children’s has begun notifying patients with scheduled appointments.
The hospital is fully staffed and care for patients at Longwood remains uninterrupted and emergent care remains open. The designation is an effort to help keep the roads clear as requested by Federal, State and City authorities.
Boston Children’s Waltham in closed. Patients and families are being contacted. Boston Children’s Martha Eliot Health Center in Jamaica Plain is also closed.
Boston Children’s appreciates families’ and patients’ patience as we manage through the evolving situation.

The MBTA transit police officer who authorities say was severely wounded by the Boston Marathon bombing suspects is out of surgery and has been stabilised. Officer Richard Donohue remains in a critical condition on Friday at Mount Auburn Hospital. The 33-year-old Donohue was brought to the hospital at about 1am on Friday suffering from a single gunshot wound.

De politie heeft de tweede verdachte van de aanslagen tijdens de marathon in Boston gearresteerd.
Dat meldt de politie in Boston op Twitter. 'We hebben hem'', twitterde de burgemeester van Boston Tom Menino. De 19-jarige terreurverdachte Dzjochar Tsjarnajev is gewond en wordt naar het ziekenhuis gebracht. De man zou er ernstig aan toe zijn.
De politie kwam de verdachte vrijdag (lokale tijd) op het spoor en omsingelde hem in Watertown, een voorstad van Boston. De verdachte hield zich op in een boot in de achtertuin van een woning. Getuigen hoorden bij het begin van de grote politieactie het geluid van wapens, maar het is nog onduidelijk of iemand gewond is geraakt. Ook zou de politie stungranaten hebben gebruikt.
Politieagenten en omstanders juichten en klapten van opluchting dat de man na een lange klopjacht eindelijk was gepakt. Dr. David Schoenfeld was reading on his couch when a fierce gunfight and explosions broke out near his Watertown home early Friday morning. Expecting massive casualties, he told his wife goodbye and bolted out the door to work at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Less than 10 minutes after arriving in the emergency department, he witnessed the aftermath of that battle.
At about 1:20 a.m., emergency medical personnel wheeled in Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev, handcuffed, unconscious, and near death. His tattered clothes had already been cut away. More than a dozen police officers surrounded him.
Emergency crews were performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Tsarnaev, who had massive injuries, including burns on his right shoulder, bullet wounds, and a gaping slash on his torso.
Trauma teams had been alerted that one or more people injured in the gun battle, possibly a suspect or a police officer or both, were on the way, and they wore protective gowns and gloves. They checked Tsarnaev for radioactivity with a Geiger counter; none was detected.
“I don’t think people were worried for their safety,’’ Schoenfeld said. But “we knew this was not a normal night for trauma . . . we were waiting for the other shoe to drop.’’
Schoenfeld said doctors placed a breathing tube in Tsarnaev’s throat and tubes in his chest to release pressure from his lungs. Schoenfeld helped coordinate and grabbed a tray with instruments for the team to use to cut open his chest and check for heart damage.
But Tsarnaev had lost massive amounts of blood from his wounds and was suffering massive cardiac and respiratory arrest. Doctors could not revive him and declared the suspect dead about 1:35 a.m. — about 15 minutes after he was brought in.

To the residents, property owners, and proprietors of the impact area, I am so grateful for the resiliency of this great city, and the kindnesses that we have witnessed in this past week.
I want to update you on the City’s plan for reopening Boylston Street and the impact area. One of my top priorities is ensuring the stability and health of the Back Bay neighborhood, and multiple city agencies have been coordinating to create a plan.
As you know, the impact area is currently an FBI crime scene, and the City is providing support to the FBI as they secure this area.
As soon as we receive clearance from the FBI, the City will move quickly to ensure that the area is safe for residents and businesses to return. We will be taking steps to secure the public safety, including:
1 Ensuring that streets and sidewalks are clean of equipment and debris and are safe for pedestrians
2 Ensuring that all buildings are structurally sound
Once we have established that these important public safety issues are resolved, we will then provide a staggered schedule for limited access for inspectors and business owners to survey their property to ascertain readiness to reopen, and for residents to return to their homes.
We believe that some blocks may be ready to open more quickly than others; we are committed to working as hard as possible to reopen the entire area, and to helping more highly impacted businesses through any structural or health and safety issues they may encounter.
All City staff who are connected to helping residents return to their homes and businesses reopen are on standby, and are prepared to execute on this plan as soon as we have clearance from the FBI. I have instructed my staff to use best efforts to get the Back Bay up and running, and I am committed to making sure that all of you have the resources you need.
What you can do right now:
1 Please take a moment to register online at cityofboston.gov or by calling 617 635-4500, so that we can have the best information to reach you quickly.
2 Consider the types of services you may need from outside contractors, and begin lining up their services, for example, construction, trash removal, board-up services, provision delivery, etc. If you need help securing reliable vendors, the City will have some lists available.
3 Please monitor the news closely for updates on when the crime scene is released. In addition, information is available at the City’s web site: www.cityofboston.gov (http://www.cityofboston.gov) and on Twitter @NotifyBoston.

De politie van de Amerikaanse staat Massachusetts heeft zondag warmtebeelden vrijgegeven van de arrestatie van de 19-jarige Dzjochar Tsarnajev. Op de beelden is te zien hoe de verdachte van de bomaanslagen in Boston zich schuilhield in een boot.

De nog levende verdachte van de aanslagen in Boston is bij kennis, melden diverse Amerikaanse media. Hij zou in het ziekenhuis zijn ontwaakt en inmiddels vragen van de autoriteiten schriftelijk hebben beantwoord.
De 19-jarige Dzjochar Tsarnajev lag buiten kennis in een ziekenhuis in Boston nadat hij vrijdagavond zwaargewond was geraakt bij zijn arrestatie. Gevreesd werd dat hij nooit een verklaring zou kunnen afleggen over de aanslagen, waarbij maandag drie doden vielen en meer dan 170 mensen gewond raakten.
Antwoorden
De gouverneur van Massachusetts heeft gezegd dat hem er alles aan gelegen is om antwoorden te krijgen over de aanslagen. Besloten is om de verdachte te verhoren zonder hem te zeggen dat hij het recht heeft om te zwijgen.
Dat besluit is alleen toegestaan als er direct gevaar is voor het publiek, bijvoorbeeld als er nog bommen zijn verstopt die niet zijn afgegaan. Gisteren zei de politie dat er inderdaad aanwijzingen zijn dat de 19-jarige verdachte en zijn broer plannen hadden voor meer aanslagen.

WASHINGTON – Attorney General Eric Holder announced today that Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, a U.S. citizen and resident of Cambridge, Mass., has been charged with using a weapon of mass destruction against persons and property at the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013, resulting in the death of three people and injuries to more than 200 people.
In a criminal complaint unsealed today in U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, Tsarnaev is specifically charged with one count of using and conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction (namely, an improvised explosive device or IED) against persons and property within the United States resulting in death, and one count of malicious destruction of property by means of an explosive device resulting in death. The statutory charges authorize a penalty, upon conviction, of death or imprisonment for life or any term of years. Tsarnaev had his initial court appearance today from his hospital room.
“Although our investigation is ongoing, today’s charges bring a successful end to a tragic week for the city of Boston, and for our country,” said Attorney General Eric Holder. “Our thoughts and prayers remain with each of the bombing victims and brave law enforcement professionals who lost their lives or suffered serious injuries as a result of this week’s senseless violence. Thanks to the valor of state and local police, the dedication of federal law enforcement and intelligence officials, and the vigilance of members of the public, we’ve once again shown that those who target innocent Americans and attempt to terrorize our cities will not escape from justice. We will hold those who are responsible for these heinous acts accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
“The events of the past week underscore in stark terms the need for continued vigilance against terrorist threats both at home and abroad,” said John Carlin, Acting Assistant Attorney General for National Security. “Friday’s arrest and today’s charges demonstrate what can be achieved by a collaborative, round-the clock response involving law enforcement officers, intelligence professionals, prosecutors and the general public.”
“Today’s charges are the culmination of extraordinary law enforcement coordination and the tireless efforts of so many, including ordinary citizens who became heroes as they responded to the call for help in the hours and days following the Marathon tragedy,” said Carmen Ortiz, U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts. “The impact of these crimes has been far-reaching, affecting a worldwide community that is looking for peace and justice. We hope that this prosecution will bring some small measure of comfort both to the public at large and to the victims and their families that justice will be served. While we will not be able to comment on any possible communications between the suspect and law enforcement at this time, as a general rule, the government will always seek to elicit all the actionable intelligence and information we can from terrorist suspects taken into our custody.”

“Friday night’s capture of the suspect brought immediate relief to a community from a public safety viewpoint. However, much work remains and many questions require answers. Today’s charges represent another step on the long road toward justice for the victims of these crimes. On behalf of the citizens of this great Commonwealth, the Massachusetts State Police will continue to work diligently with our federal and local partners to bring this defendant to justice for his alleged acts and ensure the public’s safety,” said Colonel Timothy P. “Finding the alleged perpetrators of this savage act of terrorism four days after the attack on the City of Boston was a herculean effort and shows the true cooperation and dedication of the law enforcement community,” said Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis. “We were relentless in our pursuit of the suspects. The arrest of Tsarnaev and today’s charges should send a clear message to those who look to do us harm, the entire law enforcement community will go after you, find you and bring you to justice.”
This investigation was conducted by the FBI’s Boston Division, the Boston Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police, and member agencies of the Boston Joint Terrorism Task Force, which is comprised of more than 30 federal, state and local enforcement agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Secret Service, the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority and others. In addition, the Watertown Police Department, the Cambridge Police Department, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Police Department, the Boston Fire Department, the National Guard and police, fire and emergency responders from across Massachusetts and New England played critical roles in the investigation and response.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys William Weinreb and Aloke Chakravarty from the Anti-Terrorism and National Security Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts, with assistance from the Counterterrorism Section of the Justice Department’s National Security Division.
The public is reminded that charges contained in an indictment or criminal complaint are merely allegations, and that defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Bright sunlight filtered through the awnings of the medical tent pitched in Copley Square, where I joined the many medical professionals caring for people who'd fallen ill from their 26.2-mile run. Some volunteers had been staffing the medical tent for years — one nurse had worked at the Boston Marathon more than 25 times.

A bad day for Boston
Na drie dagen was een vermoedelijke dader gearresteerd, een tweede
gedood in een shoot-out met de politie na een massale klopjacht waarbij
delen van de miljoenenstad Boston waren afgezet. Beelden van tot de tanden
toe bewapende arrestatieteams en ferme woorden van nationale politici en
vertegenwoordigers van diverse contraterrorisme-organisaties staat een ieder
bij die de nasleep van de aanslag gevolgd heeft. Wat ging daar aan vooraf,
welke verschrikkelijke terroristische daad gaf hiertoe aanleiding? Volgens
sommige media “the worst terrorist attack since 9/11”. Maar was Boston
daadwerkelijk geconfronteerd met iets dat een vergelijking met de aanslagen
in 2001 kan doorstaan? Verre van dat. Hoe erg de aanslag ook was – elk
slachtoffer is er een te veel –, met drie dodelijke slachtoffers veroorzaakt door
snelkookpanbommen gaat het om een relatief kleine aanslag (en bovendien
minder dodelijk dan bijvoorbeeld de Fort Hood shooting van een paar jaar
geleden). Het door de media en sommige politici en beleidsmakers refereren

Peter Burke had just finished the morning session of a medical conference at the Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas when the news flashed on a lobby TV: two bombs had exploded near the Boston Marathon finish line, turning an annual celebration into a war zone.
Minutes later he received an emergency text message from Boston Medical Center (BMC), where he is chief trauma surgeon. The unit was inundated with the grievously injured from an attack that killed 3, among them BU graduate student Lu Lingzi (GRS’13), and wounded at least 260. Many of those rushed to BMC were battling for life, with mangled legs, collapsed lungs, and profound blood loss. Burke called his chief nurse to find out if there was any way he could help from a distance of nearly 3,000 miles. The answer was no.

Eighteen minutes after the first bomb ripped through the crowd on Boylston Street, wounded and terrified patients arrived at Boston Medical Center.
"So much, so many casualties all at once," Boston Medical Center's Dr. Alik Farber recalled.
BMC took in 28 patients, ranging from a 5-year-old child to a 70-year-old man. People were bleeding, moaning with shrapnel the size of iPhones splitting their legs.

Dr. John T. Nagurney (Emergency Medicine): A 34-year-old man was brought to the emergency department at this hospital because of multiple traumatic injuries that he sustained when a bomb exploded while he was watching the 2013 Boston Marathon.
At the scene, the patient reportedly lost consciousness, had a complete amputation of his right leg directly below the knee, and had copious blood loss. A tourniquet had been applied to the right upper leg. He was placed on a backboard, immobilized, and transported to this hospital by ambulance, arriving at 3:20 p.m., 31 minutes after the explosion. Tsarnajev wil dat hij in een andere staat (zoals New York of Washington) berecht wordt in plaats van in Massachusetts omdat hij denkt dat hij een oneerlijk proces krijgt. Of zou het eraan kunnen liggen dat hij in New York of Washington niet op de doodstraf hoeft te rekenen?
