Syria's white helmets save civilians, soldiers and rebels alike
On a warm morning in December, a few dozen Syrians from Aleppo and Idlib—former students, teachers, vegetable sellers and farmers—gather in an abandoned firefighting training center near the Syrian-Turkish border. They have come here to learn advanced rescue skills that they will use to teach newly recruited emergency workers back home. They are members of the Syrian Civil Defense, known as the White Helmets—the largest civil society group in Syria and one that is nonsectarian, neutral and unarmed.

Every day Syrian rescue workers risk their lives to save others. Let’s start a ‘Hero Fund’ to treat these injured volunteers and support the families of those killed.

A member of the Syrian Civil Defense — a group of volunteer first responders also known as the White Helmets — has criticized the U.N. humanitarian aid agency for suspending all convoys in Syria.
Ibrahim Alhaj told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Syrian civilians will pay the price for the decision.

Syria: Attack on humanitarian convoy is an attack on humanity
September 20, 2016
(https://www.hulpverleningsforum.nl/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fsarc.sy%2Fapp%2Fuploads%2F2016%2F09%2F1-1-700x400.jpg&hash=5cc71e1ee1d667586d26aeed7dc171f4)
Press Release:
The Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) are outraged by last night’s horrific attack on a SARC warehouse and an aid convoy in Orem Al Kubra (Big Orem) in rural Aleppo.
Around twenty civilians and one SARC staff member were killed, as they were unloading trucks carrying vital humanitarian aid. Much of the aid was destroyed. The attack deprives thousands of civilians of much-needed food and medical assistance.
“We’re totally devastated by the deaths of so many people, including one of our colleagues, the director of our sub-branch, Omar Barakat. He was a committed and brave member of our family of committed staff and volunteers, working relentlessly to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people. It is totally unacceptable that our staff and volunteers continue to pay such a high price because of the ongoing fighting,” said the SARC President, Dr Abdulrahman Attar.
“From what we know of yesterday’s attack, there has been a flagrant violation of International Humanitarian Law (IHL), which is totally unacceptable. Failing to respect and protect humanitarian workers and structures might have serious repercussions on ongoing humanitarian operations in the country, hence depriving millions of people from aid essential to their survival”, said Peter Maurer, the ICRC President.
“Today, the Red Cross and Red Crescent is in mourning. In solidarity with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, we are calling on the international community to ensure the protection of humanitarian aid workers and volunteers. We are not part of this conflict,” said Tadateru Konoé, the President of the IFRC.
Syria is one of the most dangerous conflicts for humanitarian workers in the world. During the past six years, 54 staff and volunteers of SARC have lost their lives whilst carrying out their duties.
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement repeats its demand that all parties to the conflict adhere to the rules of international humanitarian law, which includes protecting aid workers.

At least four aid workers were killed in an overnight airstrike on a medical center near Aleppo, according to their charity.
The attack in the rebel-held town of Khan Touman came one day after airstrikes hit an aid convoy in the nearby town of Uram al-Kubra, killing at least 20 people and touching off a round of blame-trading.

Aleppo and its surrounding area has seen much of the fighting in Syria over the past five years. For the Aleppo branch of SARC, run mostly by young volunteers who have given up other careers to do this work, the demands have grown from health and food parcels to pest control, mending water pumps, and running projects for street children. SARC is non political and is one of the only agencies able to cross the conflict’s front lines.

Nearly two million civilians were without water in Syria's second city of Aleppo on Saturday after regime bombardment damaged one pumping station and rebels shut down another in retaliation, the UN said.
Rebel-held districts in the east of the city came under intense air and artillery fire for a fifth night as the army prepared a ground offensive to recapture the whole of the divided city.

Qatar cancels national day gala after Aleppo onslaught
Qatar has ordered the cancellation of its national day celebrations to show solidarity with the people of Aleppo during the ongoing shelling by Syrian government forces.
Qatar marks its national day on December 18 with a parade along Doha's corniche in the morning, various cultural events throughout the day, and fireworks in the evening.
Its emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, announced the decision to cancel Qatar National Day activities in a statement, the official Qatar News Agency reported.
"In solidarity with our people in the city of Aleppo, those who are subjected to the worst kind of repression and torture, displacement and genocide, his Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, Emir of Qatar, has ordered cancellation of all celebrations and events of the national day," it said.

MSF is outraged at the violence exerted against civilians and the passivity displayed by all those that can do something to stop it.
13 December 2016
As the Aleppo battle reaches its most critical point, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is outraged at the violence exerted against civilians and the passivity displayed by all those that can do something to stop it. MSF calls on all warring parties to abide by their obligation to protect civilians in both the besieged areas and in areas newly taken by the Syrian government.
All negotiations to secure access by the UN and other actors, including MSF, in order to provide humanitarian assistance to the besieged areas of east Aleppo have been unsuccessful. In most cases, people seem not to have had the chance to flee when and where they wanted. It has been impossible to evacuate patients, resupply hospitals and provide much-needed assistance to those trapped in the area. All parties concerned were, and are, responsible for this failure.
A few medical staff are still working under extreme conditions in east Aleppo. They express deep fears for their immediate future. Medical staff and the patients they care for are protected under International Humanitarian Law.
In a conflict that has a horrendous record of atrocities against civilians, and echoing the latest UN statement, MSF is extremely worried about the fate of the population.
“This is one of the worst crises that MSF has witnessed in years,” said Teresa Sancristoval, the head of MSF’s Emergency Unit for Aleppo. “We remind all sides that even war has rules. It is paramount that all parties allow people to flee to safety, allow the evacuation of sick and wounded, and facilitate the provision of protection and humanitarian assistance to those that are caught on the frontlines.”

Buses were waiting to evacuate the last rebel-held parts of Aleppo on Thursday after a new deal was reached for opposition fighters to withdraw from the city.
An AFP correspondent at an army checkpoint on the southern edges of Aleppo saw at least 20 empty buses and five ambulances ready to pick up evacuees.
